You stand up and try the door. It is unlocked. The corridor outside is ordinary — strip lighting, linoleum, the smell of institutional coffee. But the officer who was standing by the door has gone.

You walk. Not fast. The exit is at the end of the corridor, through a security door that requires a badge swipe. A uniformed officer is coming the other direction. You ask him where the bathroom is. He points. You go in, count to forty, then come out and walk straight to the exit behind a civilian who badges through ahead of you.

Outside, you breathe November air and think.

Ravn confirmed a name that does not exist. He either fabricated a file in under seven minutes — which requires system access and motive — or someone above him fed him the confirmation and he passed it down without questioning it.

Either way, the police are not safe.

You have the USB drive. You walk north toward the lakes, thinking about your next move.
